Weather Warning (Update)
Tropical wave #7 will keep rain tonight
June 09, 2024
06.00 p.m.
Discussion: Tropical wave #7 is located in the West of Costa Rica, the passage of this system and its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone have generated this afternoon rains and showers of varying intensity in the Central Valley, Northern Zone and Pacific regions. So far the highest accumulations have been recorded in: Orosi Volcano 76 mm, Parrita 50 mm, Pérez Zeledón 40 mm, Cañas 36 mm, Bagaces 32 mm, Coto Brus 34 mm, Barva de Heredia 33 mm, La Garita de Alajuela 29 mm, among others.
Forecast: Early tonight, showers and thunderstorms are expected in the North Zone, North and Central Pacific and coastal parts of the South Pacific, with accumulations of 20-50 mm in 6-hour periods, with higher amounts possible in localized areas. A gradual decrease in precipitation is expected later in the night in these regions. Meanwhile, in the Central Valley and mountains of the Caribbean, light rain and fog banks are expected in the early hours of the night, amounts between 10-30 mm in 6-hour periods.
Tropical wave #7 will continue to advance towards the Pacific Ocean, so its influence will gradually decrease later tonight. No effect of this system is expected for Monday in the country.
Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring sectors. Saturated soils are recorded in the province of Cartago, the Sarapiquí Basin and the entire Northern Zone, as well as in the North and South Pacific, making these regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
