Weather Warning
Rain of varying intensity this Sunday
May 11, 2025
12:40 p.m.
Forecast: This Sunday, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is approaching the country, and moisture content is gradually increasing in the region. This system, combined with daytime warming and the entry of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, creates an environment conducive to precipitation. Meanwhile, trade winds remain moderate in the central Caribbean Sea basin. During the morning, isolated showers have occurred in parts of the Northern Caribbean and Northern Zone, with amounts below 15 mm.
Forecast: During the afternoon, rain and thunderstorms are expected around the Nicoya Peninsula, in the Central Pacific, and in the South Pacific. This rainfall will not be widespread, but localized heavy downpours may occur. Rainfall in these regions may extend toward the coast during the early evening, with accumulated amounts between 15 mm and 60 mm, with higher amounts possible over six-hour periods. In the Central Valley, showers with thunderstorms are expected, especially in the west and north of the region, with similar amounts. In areas west of the Caribbean Sea and in the Northern Zone, scattered showers with accumulated rainfall between 10 mm and 40 mm are expected during the afternoon.
Warning: Moderate soil saturation persists in the South Pacific, Central Pacific, and Nicoya Peninsula, with values between 70% and 80%. This situation increases the risk of flooding and landslides, especially in vulnerable areas.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.
• Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
