Rainy afternoon activity in the South and Central Pacific

July 11, 2020

Discussion: The Intertropical Convergence Zone is active and close to the country, a situation that maintains instability, causing the presence of rain this afternoon. At this time, isolated rains and showers are maintained in the South Pacific, as well as in the North Zone (Upala and Guatuso), the accumulated ones are around 10-25 mm.

Forecast: During the afternoon and early evening, heavy rains and heavy showers with thunderstorms are expected in the Central and South Pacific, as well as in the North Zone, amounts between 40-70 mm are estimated. In the mountains of the Caribbean, in addition to the center and west of the Central Valley, showers and isolated showers are expected. accumulated between 20-40 mm.

Tropical wave # 19 is located at this time over Panama, its arrival is estimated between late hours of this Saturday night until Sunday morning, which can generate rains in said periods in the province of Limón, North Zone, especially near the coast and border sector. On the Pacific Slope, the heaviest rainfall will occur in the afternoon and early in the evening, mainly in the South Pacific and Central Pacific regions. On the other hand, in the Central Valley it would perceive weak rains in the mountains to the north in the morning; and isolated afternoon showers in the west of the region.

Warning: High levels of soil saturation in the Central Pacific, South Pacific, North Zone and, special attention.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Take refuge in a safe place in case of listening to a thunderstorm or perceiving strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, as well as caution for possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
