Weather Warning
Rainy day in the Caribbean and North Zone regions
January 12, 2021
9.00 a.m.
Diagnosis: The trade winds in the Caribbean Sea continue of moderate to strong intensity in the basin, causing a greater contribution of humidity to Costa Rica from the maritime sector; As a result of this, rains have been registered in the North Zone and the Caribbean since dawn, and they reach the Central Valley in the northern and eastern sectors of the region. In addition, occasional gusts of wind have been recorded over the country's mountain ranges, with values ??between 40 km / h and 70 km / h in the mountain passes.
Forecast: the rains will continue in the Caribbean and Northern Zone regions throughout the day, concentrating in the mountainous sectors. Accumulated amounts of rain are estimated between 50-75 mm and maximum amounts - on a specific basis - of 100 mm in the next 24 hours.
Part of these rains will be perceived in the Central Valley this morning, in the form of drizzles and light rains coming from the mountains, with estimated amounts that will not exceed 5 mm. On the contrary, in the Pacific regions it will predominate clear in the morning, with the possibility of occasional rains in the mountains in the afternoon.
Warning: Special attention due to gusts of wind in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges, as well as the Caribbean and the North Zone due to increased recurrence of rainfall and saturated soils.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution in areas with vulnerability to flooding due to saturation of sewers and / or flooding of rivers and streams, in the face of increased rainfall events in the Caribbean and the North Zone.
- Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
- Precaution in air navigation in the face of increased turbulence, as well as in the maritime sector due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
