Weather Warning

Tropical Wave #5 crossing Costa Rica tonight

June 12th, 2020
1.00 p.m.

Diagnosis: This Friday, tropical wave # 5 will be crossing Costa Rica. She is currently traveling over Panama and will be arriving in the country during the night. This phenomenon will be spreading the rains that will occur during this afternoon at night.

Forecast: In the next few hours, isolated rains are foreseen, but they are punctually intense in the Central Valley regions and the plains of the Northern Zone; amounts between 20-30mm and maximums of 40mm are estimated from time to time. The rains in these regions will spread scattered at night because of the tropical wave.

In Pacific regions, isolated thunderstorm showers are expected near the mountainous sectors of the Central Pacific and the South Pacific; with expected amounts between 25-30mm and maximum 50mm. In the North Pacific, the rains will be concentrated in the afternoon around the Tempisque Valley, and extending until late at night near the mountain range. Amounts between 30-40 mm and maximums of up to 70 mm are expected in the latter region.

Warning: Special attention on the coast of the Gulf of Papagayo, the Tilaran and Central Nicoya Volcanoes, and the Osa Peninsula.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
• Take refuge in a safe place in case of listening to an electrical storm or perceiving strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, as well as caution for possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
• Attention on the main national highways, such as route 27 and route 32.
