Weather Warning

Strong winds persist this Wednesday in the country

January 13, 2021
8.50 am

Diagnosis: The characteristic transit of high pressure systems in the north of the Caribbean Sea during January raises the atmospheric pressure gradient in the Central American region, thus causing strong gusts to continue in the north and center of the country. There have been gusts this morning with values ??of 50-80 km / h in Guanacaste and 65 km / h in the Central Valley. On the other hand, humidity levels have decreased in the Caribbean and Northern Zone, making the cloud cover very scattered this morning.

Forecast: During the afternoon, the pattern of strong winds will persist in the center and north of the country with gusts between 25-65 km / h in the lower parts and between 55-75 km / h in the high areas. Wind intensity is expected to decrease overnight and remain moderate for the rest of the week.

As for cloudiness, this afternoon partially cloudy skies are anticipated with occasional rains in the Caribbean regions and the North Zone, especially in high areas, with a tendency to progressively decrease as night approaches, amounts between 5-30 mm in periods of 6 hours. In the rest of the country, skies with slight to partial clouds are expected, with scattered showers in the mountains of the South Pacific. Warning: Pay special attention to wind gusts in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Precaution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to saturation of sewers and / or flooding of rivers and streams, in the face of increased rainfall events in the Caribbean and the North Zone.

• Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).

• Precaution in air navigation in the face of increased turbulence, as well as in the maritime sector due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
