Weather Warning

The strong windy pattern continues over the country

February 15, 2020
09.15 a.m.

Discussion: The atmospheric pressure remains high above the Caribbean Sea, causing strong trade winds to persist in the country. There are recurrent and intense gusts in the Central Valley, the North Pacific and the mountain ranges, with speeds that have reached 108 km/h in La Cruz de Guanacaste, in the rest of the province they are around 50-84 km/h, for their part in the Central Valley between 50-72 km/h.

Forecast: During this Saturday and also on Sunday there will be gusts of wind between strong and intense; maximums are estimated between 40-75 km/h in the Central Valley and the lower parts of Guanacaste. In the mountainous areas of these regions they can reach between 90-115 km/h.

Occasional rains are expected in the Caribbean and North Zone during the morning and night; accumulated between 10-30 mm. In addition, drizzles are possible in the mountains of the North Pacific, east and north of the Central Valley, with amounts less than 5 mm. In the rest of the country it will remain stable and predominantly dry. It is anticipated that rainfall will manifest more steadily during Sunday in the Caribbean and North Zone regions.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  • Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
