Weather Warning

Influence of Sahara dust and windy conditions on this day

July 17, 2020
10.30 a.m.

Discussion: The country is immersed in a mass of dust from the Sahara, which generates stable conditions and little rainfall at the national level, also reduces visibility mainly towards the horizon and causes a hot environment. In addition to this, moderate to strong gusts of wind are recorded in the north and center of the country, the highest speeds reaching 65 km/h in northern Guanacaste and 73 km/h in Cerro Chitaría.
Forecast: The dust mass of the Sahara will continue to be present this Friday, therefore, the possibility of rain will remain low throughout this day. The decrease in the concentration of the particulate is estimated to be gradual during Sunday

Regarding the windy pattern, trade winds between moderate and strong are estimated this Friday; with greater perception in the North Pacific, Central Valley and mountainous sectors. Maximum gusts between 50-80 km/h are expected.

Warning: We recommend caution to the population with respiratory problems and / or allergies. Beware of strong gusts of wind in the Pacific and Central Valley.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution to air navigation due to turbulence
  • Prevention against the possibility of falling trees, branches among other things affected by strong winds.
  • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the Website: www.imn.ac.cr
