Aviso Meteorológico

Very strong windy conditions on this day

February 16, 2020
09.35 a.m.

Discussion: High levels of atmospheric pressure prevail over the Caribbean Sea, generating very strong trade winds in the country. The most intense gusts occur in the Central Valley, the North Pacific and the mountain ranges, with maximums between 60-92 km/h. Product of the wind drag enters cloudiness towards the North Zone and province of Limón causing intermittent rains with accumulated between 10-20 mm in the last 8 hours.

Forecast: On this day wind gusts between strong and intense are expected; maximum speeds are estimated between 40-75 km/h in the Central Valley and the lower parts of Guanacaste; in the mountainous sectors of these regions they can reach between 90-115 km/h. It is anticipated that the very windy pattern will continue at the beginning of the week.

Intermittent rains of variable intensity will be manifested in the Caribbean and North Zone throughout this Sunday; accumulated between 20-50 mm. In addition, drizzles are possible in the mountains of the North Pacific, east and north of the Central Valley, with amounts less than 10 mm. In the rest of the country it will remain stable and predominantly dry.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  • Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
