Weather Warning

Heavy rainy activity and thunderstorm today

May 16, 2020
11.00 am

Diagnosis: The high humidity content on the country and surroundings continues this Saturday, favored by the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. In addition, very warm temperatures are recorded this morning, which are close to 32 ° C in the GAM and higher in coastal areas and plains. The combination of these factors favors the development of cloudiness, promoting strong rainy and electrical activity during the afternoon and early evening.

Forecast: During the afternoon and in the first hours of the night, showers of variable intensity and heavy showers with thunderstorms are anticipated in the Pacific regions, especially in the Central Pacific and North Pacific, with accumulated between 25-75 mm of 3- 6 hours.

For the Central Valley and the North Zone, rains and showers with an electrical storm are expected, amounts between 25-65 mm in periods of 3-6 hours, possible higher amounts locally in these regions. On the other hand, in the mountainous sectors of the Caribbean rain and showers are estimated, amounts between 10-35 mm of 3-6 hours; possible downpours in the mountains, on the coast of Limón low probability of rain is estimated in the aforementioned periods.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation, increased flow in rivers and streams, as well as sectors prone to landslides.
• Prevention on national routes such as: route 1, route 10, route 27, route 21, route 32, route 34, route 141 and route 126.
• Take refuge in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceiving strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, as well as precaution for possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
