Weather Warning

Tropical Wave #6 over Costa Rica

16 de junio de 2025
10:00 a.m.

Diagnosis: The passage of tropical wave No. 6 over Costa Rica, together with the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, maintains a very unstable environment in the country, favorable for heavy downpours with thunderstorms during the afternoon and part of the night. In addition to the above, during the weekend, accumulated rainfall between 80 mm and 150 mm was recorded near the mountain ranges in the last 48 hours.

Forecast: During the morning, a sultry atmosphere will prevail in the national territory, with occasional rains near the coast of Limón and in the Nicoya Peninsula in the next hours.

In the afternoon, showers with thunderstorms are forecast, concentrated in the North Pacific, Northern Zone and Central Valley, with estimated amounts between 25 mm and 75 mm, and punctual maximums of up to -or higher than- 100 mm near the mountain ranges. In the rest of the country, both in the Central and South Pacific and in the Caribbean, rainfall amounts between 40 mm and 80 mm are estimated near the mountainous sectors.
In the evening hours, rains will continue with moderate intensity in the North Pacific, Central Valley and Northern Zone, with estimated accumulations between 15 mm and 30 mm near the mountains. Fog banks are expected in the early hours in the surroundings of the GAM and mountain passes.
Warning: Special attention in the Nicoya Peninsula, Tempisque Valley, Sarapiquí basin, Aguas Zarcas and the canton of Upala, as they are highly vulnerable to flooding. In addition, caution is recommended in mountainous sectors, mainly in Cambronero (Route 1) and Zurquí (Route 32), as they are prone to landslides in the coming hours.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution before the possible saturation of the sewage system in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.
  • Prevention before thunderstorms: in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as they could generate falling tree branches, power lines or other objects. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
