Weather Warning

Cold push # 11 weakens but maintains influence over the country

January 17, 2021
11:20 am

Diagnosis: During the early hours of this Sunday cold thrust # 11 began to weaken and thus favored a decrease in atmospheric pressure values ??over the Caribbean Sea. Due to the above, the country presents a decrease in the windy pattern with respect to yesterday, even so, significant gusts have appeared north of Guanacaste and the mountain ranges (55-66 km / h), in addition to the central part of Guanacaste and the west of the Central Valley (35-45 km / h).

On the other hand, also in the early hours of this Sunday the Intertropical Convergence Zone was positioned near Costa Rica, causing isolated rains with intensity from weak to moderate in the coastal areas of the Central Pacific and the southwest of the Nicoya peninsula.

Forecast: For this afternoon and night, moderate wind is forecast with occasional gusts in the range of 40-60 km / h for the north of Guanacaste and in the mountainous parts of the country and between 35-45 km / h for the Central Valley and areas Guanacaste casualties.

In addition, throughout this afternoon and night there is a probability of isolated rains with occasional downpours for the Central and South Pacific, in addition to the south of the Nicoya peninsula. Estimated amounts between 10-30 mm with possible higher amounts locally. For the rest of the country, the possibility of occasional rains in mountainous areas. Estimated amounts between 5-15 mm.

Warning: Pay special attention to wind gusts in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges. Special attention also in the Pacific regions and the Nicoya peninsula due to the possibility of occasional showers.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Caution in areas with vulnerability to flooding due to saturation of sewers and / or flooding of rivers and streams, due to increased rainfall events in the Caribbean and the North Zone.
  •     Prevention of gusts of wind and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
  •     Caution in air navigation in the face of increased turbulence, as well as in the maritime sector due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
