Weather Warning
Downpours and thunderstorm in the Central and South Pacific
August 18, 2020
03.00 p.m.
Discussion: In the early hours of the afternoon there have been rains and downpours with an isolated electrical storm, mainly in the regions of the Central and South Pacific; This situation has been favored by the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, the warm morning temperatures and the entry of sea breezes. The accumulated precipitation in the last 3 hours oscillate between 10-25 mm.
Forecast: During this afternoon, rains of variable intensity and isolated showers with thunderstorms will continue to be witnessed in the Central and South Pacific regions, as well as in the Nicoya Peninsula, with amounts between 25-50 mm, possibly accumulated higher than located. In the North Zone (Upala and surrounding areas), the Central Valley (western and central sector) and the Caribbean mountains, rains and isolated showers with storm are expected, amounts estimated between 10-45 mm.
It is estimated that the precipitations extend to the first hours of the night in the Pacific and to a lesser extent in the Central Valley and North Zone, accumulated between 10-30 mm.
Warning: High levels of soil saturation prevail in the North and South Pacific Zone; therefore, particular attention is recommended.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
- Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
