Weather Warning

Windy conditions this Friday

December 18, 2020
9:35 am

Diagnosis: Cold thrust # 6 continues to transit through the northern Caribbean Sea and maintains its influence on the weather in the region. Particularly in our country, windy conditions occur with gusts between 50-83 km / h in the north of Guanacaste and mountain ranges and between 40-60 km / h in the Central Valley. In addition, the drag of moisture from the Caribbean Sea generates variable cloudiness with scattered rainfall of weak to moderate intensity in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone. Maximum accumulated recorded between 5-15 mm in the last 6 hours.

Forecast: Throughout the day an intensification of the wind is expected, with maximum gusts between 80-100 km / h in the north of Guanacaste and mountain ranges and between 50-70 km / h in the Central Valley and lower parts of Guanacaste.

Regarding rainfall, during the morning the scattered rains are expected to continue in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone. No significant rainfall is expected in the rest of the country. For the afternoon and night, isolated rains are anticipated in mountainous areas and surroundings. Estimated amounts between 5-25 mm in periods of 6 hours.

Warning: Special attention due to increased wind in the mountains, the Guanacaste area and the Central Valley. Attention also in the North Zone, the Tilarán mountain range and the surroundings of Cerro de la Muerte since they are the regions with the highest levels of saturation in the soils.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to flooding of rivers and streams, as well as in areas prone to landslides in the Caribbean.
  •     Prevention of gusts of wind and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
  •     Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased choppy seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
  •     Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
