Weather Warning

-Update- Strong winds on this Tuesday Cold surge influence from Wednesday

19 de enero de 2021
5.50 p.m.

Discussion: The high values of atmospheric pressure continue in the Caribbean basin, a situation that has favored accelerated trade winds over the country, the strongest towards the north and central part. During the day the gusts have increased and are more constant, reaching between 75 km/h in the North Pacific and the Central Valley, while in the mountain ranges they exceed 100 km/h (Cerro Buenavista 101 km/h). Cloudiness remains occasionally in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone where there are weak and isolated rains with accumulated less than 15 mm.

Forecast: The progressive increase in winds is estimated during the night and towards Wednesday, in the Central Valley and lower parts of the North Pacific with ranges between 40-75 km / h, while in the mountain ranges and north of Guanacaste with maximums between 80-110 km / h, as cold thrust # 12 enters the Gulf of Mexico and northern Central America.

On this night, intermittent cloudiness and rains are expected in the Caribbean and the North Zone, amounts between 10-50 mm in periods of 6 hours. Part of the cloud layer may occasionally extend into mountainous sectors of the Central Valley and North Pacific and generate drizzles with accumulations of less than 5 mm.

The incursion of cold surge # 12 to Central America in the early hours of this Wednesday will cause a pattern of very strong winds and more frequent gusts, as well as cloud cover and rains in the North Zone and province of Limón.

Warning: Pay special attention to strong gusts of wind in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas with vulnerability to floods due to saturation of sewers and / or flooding of rivers and streams, in the face of increased rainfall events in the Caribbean and the North Zone.
  • Prevention of gusts of wind and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution in air navigation in the face of increased turbulence, as well as in the maritime sector due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
