Weather Warning
Strong winds on this Tuesday - Cold surge influence from Wednesday
January 19, 2021
10.50 a.m.
Discussion: The high values of atmospheric pressure in the Caribbean basin generate accelerated trade winds over the country, with greater emphasis on the northern and central parts. During the first hours of this day the maximum gusts have reached between 60-80 km/h in the North Pacific and 74 km / h in the Central Valley. In the mountain ranges the maximum speeds are up to 92 km/h, registered in the Irazú Volcano. As a result of wind drag, there is dispersed cloud cover and weak rains in the North Zone and the Caribbean with accumulations of less than 5 mm.
Forecast: Throughout the day, the pattern of strong winds will persist in the center and north of the country with gusts between 30-70 km/h in the lower parts and between 60-90 km/h in the high areas. The intensity of the winds can increase during the night of Tuesday and early Wednesday morning reaching speeds close to 100 km/in the mountain ranges.
This afternoon, partially cloudy skies are anticipated with occasional rains in the Caribbean regions and the North Zone, especially in high areas, the rains tend to appear in a recurrent and generalized way during the night period, amounts between 10-40 mm in periods of 6 hours. In the rest of the country, skies with partial cloud cover are expected, isolated rains and downpours are possible in the South and Central Pacific, accumulated between 10-30 mm.
The incursion of cold surge # 12 into Central America is estimated in the early hours of Wednesday, a situation that will favor the progressive increase in the speed of the winds and the frequency of the gusts, in addition to cloud cover and rains in the North Zone and province of Limon
Warning: Pay special attention to strong gusts of wind in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution in areas with vulnerability to floods due to saturation of sewers and / or flooding of rivers and streams, in the face of increased rainfall events in the Caribbean and the North Zone.
- Prevention of gusts of wind and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
- Caution in air navigation in the face of increased turbulence, as well as in the maritime sector due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
