Weather Warning
The Intertropical Convergence Zone is approaching Costa Rica and will cause rain this afternoon
August 19, 2020
10.30 a.m.
Discussion: This Wednesday, the Intertropical Convergence Zone is located in the south of the country and will be approaching the national territory. This will cause rains to occur from early in the afternoon and until late at night both in the Pacific slope, and in an isolated way in the Central Valley.
Forecast: During this afternoon, thunderstorm showers are expected along the Pacific coast. The highest amounts of rainfall will be concentrated in the South Pacific, with estimated amounts between 50-80mm and maximums of 90-110mm on a specific basis; in the Central Pacific amounts between 30-60mm and maximums of 70-80mm are expected, and in the North Pacific rains are expected with amounts 20-40mm and maximums of 50mm.
In the Central Valley, isolated showers are expected with estimated amounts between 20-30mm and maximums of 40mm from time to time. In the North Zone and the Caribbean, there will be scattered rains that will not exceed 20mm.
In addition to this, the evolution of tropical wave # 30 is monitored, which is located at this time on the border between Colombia and Venezuela, and which, according to the National Hurricane Center of the United States, has a potential of 40 % of strengthening to a tropical cyclone in the next 2 days.
Warning: High levels of soil saturation prevail in the Pacific Slope, but specifically in the South Pacific.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
- Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
