Weather Warning

Tropical wave # 30 and its potential to become a tropical cyclone

August 19, 2020
3.30 p.m.

Diagnosis: Tropical wave # 30 is located in the center of the Caribbean Sea and moving between Haiti and Colombia, approximately 1138 km from Costa Rica. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicates that, at this time, the tropical wave has a probability of becoming a tropical depression of 60% (medium) in the next 48 hours and 80% (high) in the next 5 days.

Forecast: The latest analysis on tropical wave # 30 maintains the forecast of arrival in Costa Rica for Thursday afternoon, which would be interacting with the Intertropical Convergence Zone favoring a rainy scenario in the coming days.

If this tropical wave turns into a tropical depression, this would happen in northern Central America by the weekend. Due to its possible position and strengthening, there is a high probability of indirect influence towards the national territory, increasing the rainfall from that day and towards the weekend.

The IMN continues to strictly monitor the evolution of said disturbance and will promptly report any variation of the disturbance and its possible influence on the country.

Therefore, the IMN recommends:
