Weather Warning

Strong winds in the country by cold surge # 12

January 20, 2021
9.00 am

Diagnosis: The cold surge # 12 will be transiting the Caribbean Sea this Wednesday, this morning caused a strong increase in atmospheric pressure, a situation that is reflected in the intense winds over the country.

The meteorological stations have registered the following values: 111.5 km / h Cerro Buenavista Pérez Zeledón, 110.7 km / h Irazú volcano, 89.5 km / h in La Cruz de Guanacaste and Cerro Chitaría in Santa Ana, 71.3 km / h in Alajuela and Heredia, 62.9 km / h Turrialba volcano, 59.7 km / h in Cartago and 52.2 km / h in San José.

The cloudiness is little this morning, there have been occasional showers in the mountains, the Caribbean and the North Zone.

Forecast: The influence of the cold surge # 12 will continue this Wednesday and Thursday, with strong winds being the most important factor in this event. The maximum gusts in the Central Valley and lower parts of the North Pacific are estimated to range between 40-85 km / h, while in the mountain ranges and north of Guanacaste they will remain with maximums between 85-115 km / h.

This afternoon and evening, occasional drizzles and rains are expected in the Caribbean and the North Zone, amounts between 5-50 mm in periods of 12-24 hours. Part of the cloud layer can extend into mountainous sectors of the Central Valley and North Pacific, causing occasional drizzles and a decrease in the thermal sensation when exposed to the wind directly during the night period.

Warning: Pay special attention to strong gusts of wind in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges. Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to saturation of sewers and / or flooding of rivers and streams. • Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes). • Precaution in air navigation in the face of increased turbulence, as well as in the maritime sector due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
