Weather Warning

Heavy showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening

June 21, 2024.
10.25 a.m.

Discussion: High humidity and instability prevail over Costa Rica and its surroundings, as well as local factors, warm morning temperatures and the entry of sea breezes; the passage of tropical wave #11 is added on this Friday. All of the above will provide ideal conditions for the presence of cloudiness and heavy showers with thunderstorms.

Forecast: This afternoon and during the first part of the night, large cloud formations are expected, as well as heavy rains and thunderstorms, starting over the mountainous axis and gradually extending towards the lower areas.

In the Central Valley, rains of variable intensity and thunderstorms are expected, the strongest in the North and East, with estimated accumulations between 20-60 mm in 6-hour periods. In addition, there is a possibility of fog banks at the end of the afternoon and at night, with drizzle in the early hours of the night. For the North Pacific, the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected, amounts between 30 mm and 70 mm in 6-hour periods, higher accumulations are possible in a localized manner. In the Central and South Pacific, isolated showers are expected in the surroundings of the mountain ranges and border area with Panama, extending towards coastal areas. Estimated amounts between 10 mm and 50 mm.

Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas. Saturated soils are monitored in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the mountains of the North Caribbean and the North Zone, as well as both peninsulas and near the gulfs, which are regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention in the event of an electrical storm and seeking shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
