Weather Warning

Condiciones lluviosas en este día -actualización-

21 de octubre de 2020
02.45 p.m.

Discussion: The Intertropical Convergence Zone remains very active, which is located over Costa Rica, a situation that favors a humid and unstable atmospheric pattern causing cloudiness and the occurrence of rains. In the morning hours the strongest rainy activity was concentrated in the South Pacific, with accumulated maximums of 65 mm in 5 hours. At the beginning of this afternoon there are heavy downpours in the north of Guanacaste, Jacó and its surroundings, as well as in Golfito with accumulated between 20-40 mm in the last two hours. On the other hand, weak rains prevail in the Central Valley and mountains of the North Zone.

Forecast: In the afternoon rains of varying intensity are expected in the Pacific regions, amounts between 30-60 mm, possibly larger accumulated locally. On the other hand, in the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, isolated showers with electrical storms are expected with amounts between 25-50 mm. While in the Central Valley there will be rains between weak and moderate, accumulated between 10-30 mm, in addition, fog banks are possible at the end of the afternoon. Persistence of rainfall is anticipated, especially in the Pacific, amounts between 25-50 mm.

Tropical wave # 47 is transiting Panama, its arrival in the national territory is estimated at night, which can lead to rains during the night period from Wednesday to early Thursday in coastal areas of the Caribbean, as well as in the Pacific Central and South.

Warning: Special attention to the high percentage of soil saturation in the South Pacific, Central Pacific, Nicoya Peninsula and the upper parts of the North Zone.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
