Weather Warning

Reinforcement of rains this day due to the proximity of the low pressure system in the Caribbean

November 21, 2020
10:45 a.m.

Diagnosis: This morning, the proximity of a low pressure system to the north of Panama, together with the atmospheric instability caused by tropical wave # 53, causes the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) to be located in the south of the country and generates abundant cloudiness in the nearby maritime zones Costa Rica.

Forecast: Due to the above, this Saturday afternoon rainfall will be reinforced in the national territory. With this panorama, the projection for this afternoon and early evening is as follows:

Heavy rains and downpours are expected in the South Pacific and the mountains of the Central Pacific. Estimated amounts between 30-90 mm with possible punctual higher amounts.

Mostly cloudy conditions are expected in the Caribbean regions and the Northern Zone, as well as isolated rains and downpours (especially in the upper parts). Estimated amounts between 10-40 mm with possible higher amounts on a specific basis. The rains in these regions can reactivate again during late hours of the night and in the early hours of Saturday.

Variable partial to total cloudiness is expected for the Central Valley with isolated rains as well as heavy showers and the possibility of a storm to the west of the region near the mountainous parts, with accumulated estimates between 10-20mm and maximums of 45 mm in a vertical form. Similar amounts are expected for the North Pacific, mainly in the Nicoya Peninsula and lower amounts near the cordilleras.

Warning: Special attention due to the South Pacific, Central Pacific and North Zone since they are the regions where the most intense rains are expected.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  •     Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
  •     Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
