Weather Warning

Windy conditions on this day

December 22, 2020
10.15 a.m.

Discussion: Cold surge # 7 is gradually moving towards the Atlantic Ocean this Tuesday. The high-pressure system that accompanies this system maintains accelerated trade winds in the country, with greater perception towards the Central Valley, where the maximum gusts have reached between 40-58 km/h and in the North Pacific with speeds of up to 94 km/h. In addition, the windy pattern generates moisture drag from the Caribbean Sea to the province of Limón and the North Zone, causing occasional rains with amounts less than 15 mm.

Forecast: Windy conditions will continue throughout this day over Costa Rica. Wind gusts between 40-60 km/h are estimated in the Central Valley and lower parts of the North Pacific. Wind speeds can reach between 60-90 km/h in the north of Guanacaste and mountain ranges.

Regarding rainfall, rains of a variable between weak and moderate will persist in the Caribbean and Northern Zone this Tuesday, with accumulated between 10-40 mm. Likewise, occasional drizzles are possible in the mountain ranges and surroundings with amounts less than 5 mm.

Warning: Pay special attention to strong winds in the mountains, the Guanacaste area and the Central Valley, as well as the Gulf of Nicoya and the north of Puntarenas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to flooding of rivers and streams, as well as in areas prone to landslides in the Caribbean.
  • Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased choppy seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
