Weather Warning (Update)

Heavy rains and thunderstorms during this afternoon and early evening

September 07, 2024
4.50 p.m.

Discussion: The Intertropical Convergence Zone maintains its activity close to the national territory, which has favored a very humid and unstable atmospheric pattern. During this afternoon, heavy rains have been recorded in different regions of the country, particularly in the Central Valley, Northern Zone, Central Pacific and mountains of the Caribbean, generating accumulations so far of 90 mm in Pavas, 65 mm in Cartago, 75 mm in Santa Bárbara de Heredia, 70 mm in Quepos, 80 mm in Cutris de San Carlos, 65 mm in Upala, 105 mm in Alajuela, 114 mm in Pococí, among others.

Forecast: Heavy rain will continue to occur during the rest of the afternoon and early part of the night, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms in the Central Valley, Northern Zone, and Caribbean mountains. This rain will progressively spread towards the North Pacific. Accumulations are estimated between 30-70 mm, in periods of 6-12 hours, with possible higher accumulations in a localized manner.

Moderate showers are expected in the Central and South Pacific, amounts between 30-60 mm in periods of 6-12 hours.

In the second part of the night, rainfall will gradually decrease in much of the country. Rain is not ruled out on the Pacific coasts.

Warning: Saturation of elevated soils continues in the Northern Zone, South Pacific and Nicoya Peninsula, where rains will be recurrent, so these areas are highly vulnerable. Also, the rains expected in urban areas can cause congestion in the sewer system and flash floods.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
