Weather Warning

Rainy conditions in the Caribbean and Northern Zone this Wednesday and cold thrust # 8 will enter the Caribbean Sea tomorrow Thursday

December 23, 2020
10:15 am

Diagnosis: Since this morning, the accelerated trade wind, product of the high levels of atmospheric pressure over the region, has been generating a drag of humidity from the Caribbean Sea towards the country. This causes mostly cloudy conditions with rains in the Caribbean, North Zone and east of the Central Valley. The maximum accumulated in the last 6 hours are around 5-15 mm with some localized showers of between 25-40 mm. In addition, windy conditions continue in the center and north of the country with maximum gusts between 55-73 km / h in northern Guanacaste and between 45-66 km / h west of the Central Valley.

Forecast: During the morning and part of the afternoon, the mostly cloudy sky will persist with intermittent rains of varying intensity in the Caribbean, the North Zone, the central-east of the Central Valley and the mountains of the country. The accumulated are estimated between 5-25 mm in periods of 6 hours, with the possibility of higher accumulations (40-50 mm) in a specific manner. During the afternoon, scattered rains are also expected for the Central and South Pacific with amounts estimated between 10-30 mm.

On the other hand, the entry of cold thrust # 8 to the north of the Caribbean Sea is projected in the course of tomorrow, Thursday, a situation that would favor the intensification of the wind over the country. The greatest impact of this system on our territory is expected as of Friday, with an increase in rains in the Caribbean and the North Zone, in addition to strong gusts that could exceed 100 km / h north of Guanacaste. The combined effect of cloudiness and wind is also expected to generate a significant decrease in wind chill.

Warning: Special attention in the North Zone and the Caribbean since they are the regions where the heaviest rains are expected. Special attention in the area of ??Guanacaste, the west of the Central Valley and the mountain ranges of the country due to the strong gusts.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to flooding of rivers and streams, as well as in areas prone to landslides.
  •     Prevention of gusts of wind and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  •     Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
