Weather Warning Update

Convergence Zone over the country

September 25, 2020
2:30 p.m.

Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone remains active and close to our territory, promoting the entry of moisture from the Pacific maritime sector.
In the last hours, rains and downpours with electrical storms have been registered in various sectors of the country. In the North Zone, 16 mm in Caño Negro; in the South Pacific, 22 mm in Golfito; for the Central Valley, 13 mm have been recorded in Goicoechea, to name a few.

Forecast: For this afternoon and first hours of the night, the probability of rains with downpours and thunderstorms remains high for the Pacific slope (especially South Pacific), North Zone and the Central Valley, accumulated maximums are expected between 25 -100 mm and possible higher amounts locally. For the mountains of the Caribbean (especially in the South Caribbean) isolated rains and possible downpours with a localized electrical storm are expected, maximum amounts estimated between 15-50 mm. For the coastal North Caribbean, no significant rainfall is expected in the evening period.

Warning: Special attention to the Nicoya Peninsula and mountainous sectors of the North Zone and the west, north and south of the Central Valley, as well as Valle del General, the border sector of the South Pacific and mountains of the South Caribbean, because they are the regions with higher moisture saturation in soils.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation.
• Take shelter in a safe place in case you hear an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
