Variable rains this afternoon in frequent sectors

Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone is located over Costa Rica and Panama, bringing moisture from both sides. The presence of trade winds in the central Caribbean Sea and local factors are favoring unstable conditions this early week. During the early morning and early morning hours, scattered rains have occurred in parts of the northern Caribbean and the Northern Zone, with accumulated rainfall of less than 15 mm over the last 6 hours.

Forecast: Cloudy conditions will occur during the morning and early afternoon, with very localized rain and showers along the Caribbean coasts and in the north-central part of the Northern Zone (accumulations between 5-30 mm). In the afternoon, cloudy conditions will occur over the mountains in the west and south of the northern Caribbean, with possible isolated showers with accumulated rainfall of 15-40 mm, with maximums of up to 65 mm. On the Pacific side, scattered rain and showers with thunderstorms are forecast for the mountains of the South Pacific (Buenos Aires, Potrero Grande, Coto Brus, Corredores) and the Central Pacific (Parrita, Quepos, southwest of the Los Santos Zone, and Pérez Zeledón). Estimated accumulated rainfall is expected to be between 25 and 50 mm (1.0–2.0 in), with highs of 70 and 90 mm (2.7–3.5 in). In the North Pacific, these rains will be more localized, over the mountains of southeastern and northeastern Puntarenas and the southern Nicoya Peninsula, with rainfall similar to the rest of the Pacific. The Central Valley will experience rain in the east with scattered showers and showers with thunderstorms in the west. Amounts range from 10 to 30 mm (0.4–1.2 in), with highs of 50 mm (2 in).

Warning: Soils saturated between 85-97% are present in both the South Pacific (mountainous areas and around the Golfo Dulce) and the North Caribbean plain. This situation increases the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas and small landslides in mountainous areas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Be cautious about sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevent from thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are felt near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, etc. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
