Weather Warning

Downpours and thunderstorm this afternoon in the Central and South Pacific -Update-

September 26, 2020
02.30 p.m.

Discussion: Local factors, such as the high temperatures registered this morning and the entry of sea breezes, have generated heavy downpours and an electrical storm in the west of the Central Valley, Central Pacific and South at the beginning of this afternoon. The highest accumulated are presented in Athens of 50 mm, in the last hour.

Forecast: In the remainder of the afternoon, isolated but strong rains and downpours will continue, accompanied by an electrical storm in the regions of the Central and South Pacific, the Nicoya Peninsula, Abangares and surroundings; Amounts between 30-60 mm are estimated with possible higher accumulated in a localized manner. On the other hand, in the north of Guanacaste, Central Valley (center and west), as well as the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, isolated rains of moderate intensity and electrical storm, accumulated between 20-50 mm, are estimated.

Rainfall will last during the first hours of the night in coastal areas of the Pacific, amounts between 10-30 mm.

Warning: Special attention due to the high percentage of soil saturation in the South Pacific, the Nicoya Peninsula, as well as the mountains of the Central Pacific and the North Zone.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
