Weather Warning

Downpours and thunderstorm this afternoon in the Central and South Pacific

September 26, 2020
10.45 a.m.

Discussion: The warm morning temperatures and the entry of sea breezes are factors that will lead to the development of cloudiness towards the afternoon hours and in turn isolated downpours accompanied by an electrical storm, the strongest concentrated in regions of the Central and South Pacific.

Forecast: This afternoon there will be isolated but strong rains and downpours accompanied by an electrical storm in the Central and South Pacific regions, as well as in the Nicoya Peninsula, amounts between 25-50 mm are estimated, possibly higher accumulated in a localized way. On the other hand, in the north of Guanacaste, the Central Valley (center and west), as well as the North Zone and the Caribbean mountains, isolated rains of moderate intensity and electrical storms are estimated, accumulated between 20-40 mm.

Rainfall will last during the first hours of the night in coastal areas of the Pacific, amounts between 10-30 mm.

Warning: Special attention due to the high percentage of soil saturation in the South Pacific, the Nicoya Peninsula, as well as the mountains of the Central Pacific and the North Zone.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
