Weather Warning

Tropical Wave #3 over Costa Rica this Wednesday

May 28, 2025
10:00 a.m.

Diagnosis: Tropical wave #3 will cross Costa Rica during the course of Wednesday, increasing the atmospheric instability over the country and reinforcing rainfall for this afternoon and evening.

Forecast: In the next hours, rains will occur near the South Caribbean coast with accumulated rainfall between 15-20 mm; while, in the rest of the country will prevail partly cloudy skies.

In the afternoon, there will be isolated showers with thunderstorms in the national territory. In the Central Valley, the Northern Zone and mountainous sectors of the Caribbean, estimated amounts between 30 mm and 40 mm in periods of 6 hours, localized accumulations of more than 60 mm are possible. On the Pacific slope, the most intense precipitation will be recorded near the coast, but mainly in the South Pacific with estimated amounts between 30 mm and 60 mm with maximums of up to 90 mm in the vicinity of the gulf.

During the first hours of the night, isolated rains are expected mainly in the North Caribbean coast and the Pacific coast, with estimated amounts of up to 40 mm in 6 hours.
Warning: Soil saturation with high levels between 85-90% are present in the Nicoya Peninsula, Sarapiqui basin, South Pacific, this situation increases the risk of flash floods in low areas and small landslides in mountainous sectors.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution for sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention before thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
