Weather Warning

Rainfall on this day in different parts of the country - Moderate winds in the North Pacific and Central Valley

December 29, 2020
10.45 a.m.

Discussion: Atmospheric pressure remains high over the Caribbean Sea, a situation that generates moderate trade winds towards our country, with greater perception in Guanacaste, the gusts have reached up to 79 km/h in La Cruz, as well as in the Central Valley with maximums of 59 km/h in Cerro Chitaría. The windy pattern generates moisture drag from the Caribbean Sea to the province of Limón and the North Zone, causing cloudiness and rain in these sectors, the amounts are less than 15 mm in the last 6 hours.

Forecast: Moderate wind gusts will persist in the north and center of the national territory, speeds are estimated between 60-80 km / h in the north of Guanacaste; in the Central Valley and the lower parts of the North Pacific ranges between 40-60 km / h.

Regarding rainfall, intermittent rains are expected in the Northern Zone and in an isolated manner in the Caribbean, amounts between 10-30 mm; As the evening period passes, it is estimated that cloudiness and rainfall decrease in these regions. On the other hand, in the Central and South Pacific, the entry of humidity is expected and, in combination with the warm morning temperatures, generate cloudy developments, enhancing rains and downpours during the afternoon and early hours of the night, accumulated between 30-60 mm.

Warning: Special attention in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges of the country due to gusts of wind. As well as the Central and South Pacific with heavy downpours.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to flooding of rivers and streams, as well as in areas prone to landslides.
  • Prevention of gusts of wind and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
