Weather Warning

Rains this afternoon due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone

July 9, 2024
11:10 a.m.

Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone over our country and local factors will be favoring the presence of afternoon rains for the afternoon of this Tuesday. In the morning hours, instability in maritime areas near the Caribbean and Pacific coast of Costa Rica have caused the incursion of cloudiness and localized rains in the northern border area of the national territory.

Forecast: Cloud developments will occur from early afternoon in the mountains of the Central Pacific, South Pacific and to the east and south of the North Pacific region (around the peninsula and Gulf of Nicoya). These will give way to the occurrence of showers and downpours accompanied by thunderstorms. The estimated amounts would be between 20 - 50 mm with maximum amounts of 70 mm (especially in the North Pacific, Central Pacific).

The Central Valley will present showers with possible storms to the north and west, medium probability of rain towards the end of the afternoon and early hours of the night towards the other sectors. The Caribbean regions will have showers over the mountains. Accumulations for both regions would be between 10 - 50 mm.

The Northern Zone will have the possibility of isolated showers and localized thunderstorms in the afternoon, with amounts between 20 - 50 mm.

Warning: Attention to the coastal Caribbean regions and parts north of the Northern Zone, which increase the probability of rain for the following days.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to saturation of sewers in places prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of occurrence or perception of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
