Meteorological warning

Rainy conditions on the Caribbean side this Sunday

january 19, 2020
9:30 am

Diagnosis: The strong trade winds combined with high levels of humidity in the atmosphere have led to favorable conditions for the generation of rainfall on the Caribbean slope. So far this Sunday there are accumulated maximum of 45 mm in the area, although the intensity of the rains has dropped considerably. On the other hand, part of the activity generated in the Caribbean has reached the east and center of the Central Valley causing rains and drizzles with maximum amounts between 1-10 mm. Apart from this, strong gusts are also recorded in the Guanacaste area, west of Central Street and in the mountain ranges. Some of the most intense bursts recorded so far are 101 km / h at La Cruz, 83 km / h at the Orosi volcano, 65 km / h at Cuajiniquil, 54 km / h at Alajuela and 65 km / n at Cerro Chitaria.

Forecast: Throughout this Sunday, intermittent rains will be maintained with intensity between weak and moderate for the Caribbean and North Zone regions with estimated maximum accumulated between 30-60 mm in 24 hours.

On the other hand, for the Central Valley there will be conditions of variable cloudiness between partial and total with occasional drizzles mainly in the mountainous parts and its surroundings, in addition to the center and east of the region (surroundings of Cartago, Tres Ríos, Curridabat, San Pedro , San José) with maximum cumulative estimates estimated between 10-25 mm in 24 hours. For the Pacific regions it is expected cloudiness between little and partial with isolated rains in the mountains and surroundings, the maximum accumulated are estimated to be less than 20 mm in 24 hours.

As for the wind, moderate wind is expected with occasional gusts in the range of 40-60 km / h for the lower areas of Guanacaste and the Central Valley, in addition to 70-100 km / h for the mountain ranges.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
  • • Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  • • Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  • • Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
  • • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation, increased flow in rivers and streams, and in areas prone to landslides. Particular attention to the Banano, Coen, Telire, Barbilla, Chirripó and Reventazón rivers as they are reported to be grown, as well as to the Sixaola river that is reported overwhelmed in the sector known as Las Parcelas.
