Weather Warning

Wet and rainy pattern this Friday

November 17, 2023
10:10 a.m.

Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone remains over Costa Rica, in part due to the low pressure system in the Caribbean Sea. This favors a humid and unstable pattern in the country. These conditions have generated cloudy and rainy conditions in several sectors of the Central Pacific and South Pacific and more dispersed towards the mountains of the Northern Zone, Northern Caribbean, Nicoya Peninsula and Central Valley. Amounts between 20 – 60 mm in the last 6 hours.

Forecast: Rainfall will continue to be present for much of the day over the national territory. These will continue during the afternoon and night with a dispersed character towards the North Pacific, Northern Zone, Central Valley and mountains of the North Caribbean and South Caribbean. Amounts between 15 - 40 mm with maximums located between 45 - 60 mm in periods of 6-12 hours. For the Central Valley, light rain could occur with banks of fog during the night.

For the afternoon period and mainly the night of today, Friday, in the Central Pacific and South Pacific, rains of varying intensity are expected with the possibility of an electrical storm with amounts between 15 – 50 mm and localized maximums between 60 – 80 mm in periods of 6-12 hours.

Warning: High soil saturation prevails in the South Pacific, Central Pacific, Northern Zone and mountainous Northern Caribbean, take extreme measures.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods, as well as the main routes of the country in the event of heavy rain events.
• Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
