Weather Warning (Update)

Variable rains this afternoon and evening in South and Central Pacific regions

November 18, 2023
5.00 p.m.

Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone over Costa Rica maintains instability in maritime areas surrounding both slopes. This factor has generated cloudy conditions with variable rains for both the Central Valley and the Pacific regions and mountains of the Caribbean and Northern Zone.

Specifically, they have accumulated so far for: the Central Valley between 15 - 35 mm, for the North Pacific of 15 - 25 mm with a specific maximum in the Nicoya Peninsula of 55 mm, Central and South Pacific between 20 - 40 mm with maximums 50 mm. On the other hand, the Northern Zone and Caribbean regions only report locally on the surrounding sectors of Upala (90 mm) and Siquirres (50 mm).

Forecast: For the afternoon and evening hours, precipitation is expected to continue, with scattered rains and downpours, mainly in sectors of the Central-South Pacific and mountains of the western Caribbean (mountainous parts and surrounding low sectors). The estimated amounts in 24-hour periods will be between 25 - 50 mm with very specific maximums between 60 - 90 mm.

The Northern Zone will have localized downpours with thunderstorms, with accumulated amounts between 15 - 45 mm and specific maximums of 70 mm.

The Central Valley will tend to present scattered rains that will decrease at night, with amounts less than 30 mm. It will remain cloudy and fog banks during the night.

Warning: Soil saturation persists in the South Pacific, mountainous Central Pacific, Osa Peninsula, Northern Zone and mountainous Northern Caribbean.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods, as well as the main routes of the country in the event of heavy rain events.

• Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
