Weather Warning
Moderate to strong wind gusts this Thrusday
April 17, 2025
09:30 a.m.
Diagnosis: High atmospheric pressure levels north of the Caribbean Sea basin are favoring accelerated trade winds over the country. So far, the lower reaches of the Central Valley and the North Pacific have recorded gusts between 30 km/h and 65 km/h, while northern Guanacaste and the mountain ranges have been between 70 and 90 km/h. Occasional clouds in the northern Caribbean and the Northern Zone have produced short-lived rain with accumulated rainfall below 18 mm.
Forecast: Moderate to strong winds will continue throughout the day in the center and north of the country. Gusts are expected to remain at similar levels to those recorded this morning: between 40 and 65 km/h for the Central Valley and between 70 and 95 km/h for northern Guanacaste and the mountain ranges. Scattered clouds are expected to remain in the north of the country, with possible occasional light to moderate rain showers. In the mountains east of Parrita and around the Golfo Dulce, there is a possibility of short-lived afternoon showers.
Warning: Special attention is recommended in the mountains and surrounding lowlands due to the presence of strong to very strong gusts.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Avoid wind gusts and their possible damage to roofs, electrical wiring, signs, and trees, as well as in the mountainous areas of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
• Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, and northern Central Pacific.
• Avoid burning of all types, as they can get out of control.
