Weather Warning
Rainy activity this afternoon and into the evening
April 30, 2025
10.20 a.m.
Discussion: The Intertropical Convergence Zone is beginning to show increased activity and is likely to remain close to Costa Rica. This favors a humid and unstable outlook, ideal for cloudiness and the occurrence of precipitation and thunderstorms.
Forecast: Variable-intensity rains and thunderstorms are expected for this afternoon and the first part of the night. The heaviest rainfall and thunderstorms will occur in the Central and South Pacific, the Nicoya Peninsula, and the Tempisque Valley; rainfall amounts between 20 and 75 mm are estimated over a six-hour period, with higher accumulations possible at certain times.
In addition, the possibility of moderate rainfall cannot be ruled out in the Central Valley, the mountains of the Northern Zone, and the Caribbean during the afternoon.
Warning: Due to the rains of recent days, soils show high saturation, between 85% and 95% in the South and Central Pacific, a situation that increases the risk of flash flooding and/or landslides.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Be cautious about sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.
- Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
