Weather Warning

Showers This Tuesday in Several Regions of the Country

May 6, 2025
9:20 a.m.

Diagnosis: The proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, together with local factors such as daytime heating and moisture influx from the Pacific Ocean, will favor variable rainfall over the country this Tuesday.

Forecast: In the afternoon, showers with thunderstorms are expected in the southern and central Pacific regions, which may continue in coastal areas during the early evening. Rainfall amounts between 30 mm and 75 mm are expected over 6-hour periods, with possible locally higher accumulations. These conditions may also occur in the Central Valley, especially in the northern and western sectors, as well as in the Nicoya Peninsula, around the Gulf of Nicoya, and the Tilarán mountain range, reaching to a lesser extent the Tempisque Valley sectors.

During the afternoon, brief showers and rain are not ruled out in the Caribbean mountains and Northern Zone, with estimated amounts between 10 mm and 30 mm.

Warning: The southern and central Pacific regions present soils with moderate to high saturation levels, between 75% and 95%. In the Central Valley, Nicoya Peninsula, and Tilarán mountain range, saturation levels range between 40% and 75%. This situation increases the risk of flooding and landslides, especially in vulnerable areas.

Given the above, the IMN recommends:

• Exercise caution due to possible drainage system overflows in areas prone to this type of flooding.
• Take preventive measures against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if storms develop or if you notice strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
