Meteorological Report N ° 12-IMN-031120-Hurricane Eta downgrades to category 2 after entering Nicaragua and continues to indirectly influence Costa Rica

Diagnosis: Hurricane Eta has lost strength after entering Nicaraguan territory maintaining sustained winds of 165 km / h (category 2), its center is located 70 km west-southwest of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua. Regarding our country, this system is located approximately 441 km north of the city of Limón. Eta travels at 9 km / h in a westerly direction, entering Nicaraguan territory.
 
 In Costa Rica, the indirect influence of this system has caused rains of variable intensity during this afternoon and part of the night, the most intense on the Pacific slope, especially in the North Pacific (Guanacaste), where accumulations of up to 52mm are recorded. in the last 3 hours. With cut-off at 10:00 pm, the accumulated maximums of the last 6 hours (since the previous report) by region are:

Forecast: According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Eta will continue its movement over Nicaraguan territory, progressively losing intensity to later enter Honduran soil approximately tomorrow, Wednesday, around noon, with tropical storm intensity. Throughout this period, the indirect influence on Costa Rica will persist.
 
In Guanacaste there are important cloud cores, which would be generating rains of variable intensity, with localized downpours, especially in places like Liberia, La Cruz, the Nicoya Peninsula and coastal sectors of the North Pacific. Amounts between 20-100 mm are estimated.
 
In the Central and South Pacific rains are expected between weak and moderate with occasional showers, especially in the coastal zone and border sectors with Panama. With accumulated estimates between 20-40mm.
 
In the Central Valley, the North Zone and the Caribbean, there could be intermittent rains; in addition to fog banks.
 
Warning: Special attention due to the saturation of soils in the regions of the Pacific Slope, particularly in the cantons of Nandayure, Nicoya, Liberia, Carrillo and Hojancha in the North Pacific, in the South Pacific to Buenos Aires, Brus preserve and Osa and in the Central Pacific Parrita and Aguirre. Also pay special attention to the Los Santos area due to the risk of landslides.
 
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
 
• Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation and increased flow in rivers and streams.
• Take shelter in a safe place in case you hear an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
