Weather Warning
Strong winds in the country and rains in the Caribbean
January 11, 2021
9.30 am
Diagnosis: Cold surge # 10 is leaving the Caribbean Sea this morning and entering the Atlantic Ocean; At the same time, a high pressure system is over the Gulf of Mexico, which is why strong winds continue in the country today, as well as the rains and downpours in the Caribbean and the North Zone this beginning of the week.
Forecast: Windy conditions will prevail this day over Costa Rica, wind gusts can reach between 40-75 km / h in the Central Valley, lower parts of the North Pacific and the Gulf of Nicoya, on the other hand in the north of Guanacaste and the mountain ranges are expected speeds between 60-85 km / h.
In addition, in the Northern Zone and the province of Limón, intermittent rains and downpours will continue during the day, amounts between 20-45 mm are expected in periods of 6 hours.
There will be occasional drizzles in mountainous and adjacent sectors of the Central Valley and Pacific, with accumulated less than 20 mm. During the afternoon and early evening, isolated rains and downpours are expected in the Central and South Pacific, due to humidity and local factors, accumulated between 15-50 mm.
Warning: Special attention due to gusts of wind in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges, as well as the Caribbean and the North Zone due to increased recurrence of rainfall and saturated soils.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution in areas with vulnerability to flooding due to saturation of sewers and / or flooding of rivers and streams, in the face of increased rainfall events in the Caribbean and the North Zone.
• Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
• Precaution in air navigation in the face of increased turbulence, as well as in the maritime sector due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
