Forecast: Tropical depression Eta will continue to cross Honduran territory this Thursday, it is expected to head towards the Gulf of Honduras in the early hours of Friday, it is possible that it will resume the category of a tropical storm as it enters the Caribbean Sea on Saturday morning, in direction towards Cuba.

This morning it is expected that the rainy activity will continue moderate in regions of the Central Pacific, amounts between 10-70 mm are estimated, possibly higher amounts locally. In the South Pacific, North Pacific, North Zone, Central Valley and mountainous sectors of the Caribbean, intermittent rains between weak and moderate will predominate, accumulated between 10-50 mm.

During the afternoon the rains and downpours of variable intensity will continue, the strongest in Pacific regions, amounts between 10-60 mm are estimated, higher accumulated are possible in a specific way. In the Central Valley and the North Zone, the rains will continue intermittently with accumulated between 10-50 mm, on the other hand, in the mountains of the Caribbean, isolated rains and showers are possible, amounts less than 40 mm.

This Thursday the indirect influence of Eta will be maintained in most of Costa Rica, Friday is expected to be a transition day towards less rainy conditions in the Central Pacific, South Pacific and Central Valley. On Saturday there will be a significant decrease in humidity over the country and it is anticipated that this day will be when the national territory will leave the storm conditions.

Warning: Special attention due to the saturation of the soils in the regions of the Pacific Slope, particularly in the cantons of Nandayure, Nicoya, Liberia, Bagaces, Carrillo and Hojancha in the North Pacific, in the South Pacific to Buenos Aires, Coto Brus and Osa and Parrita and Aguirre in the Central Pacific. Attention to the area of Los Santos and Garabito due to the risk of landslides. In the Desamparados area, north of Barva and Varablanca, as well as on Route 32 in the case of Central Valley.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation and increased flow in rivers and streams.
  • Take shelter in a safe place in case you hear an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
