Meteorological Report N ° 3

Tropical storm Iota strengthens

November 14, 2020
6:45 p.m

Diagnosis: Tropical storm Iota is located 770 km east-southeast of Cabo Gracias a Dios between Honduras and Nicaragua, increased its displacement speed this afternoon to 11 km / h, now registers sustained winds of 95 km / h. Due to its position, it has begun to show slight influence in the national territory with rains in the North Zone mainly, as part of its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the cloud bands associated with the system itself. The precipitation amounts for the last 12 hours (6am to 6pm) are specified by climatic region in the following table:

Forecast: The tropical storm will continue to increase its intensity in the next 12 to 24 hours, it is expected to reach the hurricane category tomorrow, Sunday, starting in the afternoon or earlier. It will be advancing in the waters of the Caribbean Sea north of Colombia and east of Panama tonight. Its trajectory and circulation of the induced winds towards its center will be promoting a very humid environment in our country, so it is expected that:

During the night of this Saturday, the strong rainy activity remains in the north of the country, especially the North Zone and the North Caribbean, as well as the mountains of Guanacaste, with amounts between 20-70 mm. In the Central Valley there will be isolated rains and fog, a possible scattered storm, with amounts between 5-25 mm.

Towards the early hours of Sunday and the morning of the same, it is expected that the rainy activity will be concentrated especially in the Central and South Pacific, where there will be amounts between 20-80 mm.

Warning: Special attention in regions of the South Pacific and the Nicoya Peninsula, as well as in the North Zone, due to high levels of saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation and increased flow in rivers and streams.
Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
