Weather Report N ° 6

Hurricane Iota keeps getting stronger

November 15, 2020
2:00 p.m.

Diagnosis: Hurricane Iota, still in category 1, is located 520 km east-southeast of Cabo Gracias a Dios between Honduras and Nicaragua, increased its displacement speed to 15 km / h, and now registers sustained winds of 150 km / h. This morning it has maintained a slight interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), beginning to develop events of isolated showers just started in the afternoon in the Pacific and North Zone. The amounts of precipitation in the last 12 hours have been low, they are specified in the following table:

Forecast: Iota will continue to increase its intensity in the coming hours. It will be moving into the Caribbean Sea, expected to reach the Nicaraguan coast on Monday night. The main effect that it will have on our country this Sunday will be the modulation of the ITCZ, so it is expected that:

For the afternoon and early evening, strong rainy activity will continue on the Pacific slope, particularly in the Central and South Pacific with amounts between 20-90 mm. In the case of the North Zone, the Central Valley, and the Caribbean mountains, strong and isolated showers with an electrical storm are expected, amounts between 20-50 mm.

It is expected that during late hours of the night, the rainy activity will remain in the South Pacific, with amounts between 10-60 mm in periods of 3 to 6 hours.

It is anticipated that the indirect influence of Hurricane Iota will continue in the first days of next week and that the regions with the greatest potential for rainfall associated with this cyclone will be concentrated in the Central and South Pacific.

Warning: Special attention in South Pacific regions due to high levels of saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation and increased flow in rivers and streams.
  •     Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
  •     Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB  Page: www.imn.ac.cr

Next report: Sunday, 8 p.m.
