Tropical Storm Julia is rapidly weakening as it positions itself off the Pacific coast of Nicaragua

October 9, 2022
06.00 p.m.

Diagnosis: Tropical storm Julia is located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Nicaragua and its influence in the region is beginning to decrease, while the speed of sustained winds decreases. At this time it is located at the coordinates 12.5° N, 87.6° W; moving south of El Salvador at 26 km/h with sustained winds of up to 75 km/h.

Over our country, in the last 6 hours there have been intermittent rains between weak to moderate intensity on the North Pacific slope with amounts of 5-40 mm, in the Central Pacific 20-40 mm and between 10-43 in the South Pacific. Also, 5-50 mm in the mountains of the North Zone. Amounts in the last 12 hours are recorded between 100-160 mm in the Central and South Pacific, between 70-110 mm in the North Pacific.

Forecast: Julia is expected to move away from the Nicaraguan coast in the Pacific, moving west, during the night and early Monday morning, it is expected to be south of El Salvador, weakening as a tropical depression. In our country, the indirect influence of the tropical cyclone will continue tonight with intermittent rainfall in the North Zone, North Caribbean and Guanacaste, as well as in the Central and South Pacific.

The Central and Caribbean Valley will have weak and intermittent rains throughout this Sunday. The amounts of rain in the next 12 hours will be between 10-40 mm in the North Zone intermittently, 5-10 mm in the mountainous Caribbean. In the Central and South Pacific, amounts between 10-40 mm in 12 hours and punctual maximums could be higher; in the North Pacific amounts between 10-60 mm in the next 12 hours; the rains will also be present, but to a lesser extent in the Central Valley with amounts between 5-20 mm in the next 12 hours.

Julia's influence will last at least until Monday morning, gradually diminishing the indirect effect on the country. Warning: Caution in the North and South Pacific regions with a very high probability of flooding, North Zone and Caribbean mountains, due to these regions having high levels of soil saturation due to the possibility of landslides.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to saturation of the sewage system and possible sudden floods, as well as the main routes of the country in case of heavy rain events.

• Prevention before an electrical storm and seek refuge in a safe place in the event of strong gusts of wind appearing or being perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.

Next report will be issued at 9 p.m. m. from this sunday
