Weather Report #12

The influence of tropical storm Marco gradually decreases

August 22, 2020
03.15 p.m.

Discussion: The latest report from the National Hurricane Center (NHC for its acronym in English) indicates that tropical storm Marco is located 80 km from the western sector of Cuba, moving at a speed of 20 km / h. As this storm gradually moves towards the northwest, its indirect influence has diminished considerably. In the early hours of this afternoon, the rainy activity has been isolated and has occurred in the North and South Pacific, as well as in Upala and its surroundings with accumulated maximums between 20-40 mm.

Forecast: Tropical storm Marco will continue its movement towards the Gulf of Mexico, the indirect influence it exerts towards our country will be less and less.

In the remainder of the afternoon, rain and electricity activity is estimated in isolation in regions of the Pacific and North Zone, amounts between 30-60 mm and possible accumulated higher in a specific manner. On the other hand, in the Central Valley and mountains of the Caribbean, scattered rains and fog banks are expected towards late afternoon, accumulating between 10-20 mm.

At night, isolated showers and an electrical storm will continue in the Pacific coastal areas, as well as in the North Zone, accumulating between 25-50 mm; for its part, scattered rains are possible in the Central Valley.

Warning: Special attention in the North Pacific, the North Zone and the South Pacific due to high level of soil saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Caution on the main national highways due to reduced visibility, special attention to Route 27 tonight due to heavy downpours.
  • Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
  • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr

Next report will be issued today at 9:00 p.m.
