Informe Meteorológico

Condiciones atmosféricas inestables sobre Costa Rica generan lluvias esta noche

29 de mayo de 2020
6.00 p.m.

Diagnosis: An extensive low-pressure system - which has been followed up in the last 84 hours - continues to be positioned in the Pacific Ocean, 700 km west of the Guanacaste coast; it keeps the Intertropical Convergence Zone in southern Central America very active, causing rainfall of variable intensity throughout the country. In addition, at this time tropical wave # 2 is located in Panama and continues to move towards Costa Rica.

With a break at 5:30 pm, the maximum accumulated figures recorded this afternoon by region are:

Región

Rango de acumulados máximos (en milímetros)

Valle Central

20-63 mm

Caribe Norte

 20-25 mm

Caribe Sur

5-15 mm

Pacífico sur

15-20 mm

Pacífico Central

34-42 mm

Pacífico Norte

44-60 mm

Zona Norte

17-20 mm  (91 mm en el sector Las Delicias)

Forecast: The low pressure system has a 60% probability of becoming a tropical depression in 2 days, while heading towards Guatemala and southern Mexico. As long as it remains in its current position, it will be disturbing the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which is located on our territory, contributing humidity and instability to our country. The influence of the ITCZ ??is expected throughout the weekend.

Variable intensity rains are expected throughout the night in the Central Valley, plains of the Northern Zone and the Caribbean; amounts between 10-20 mm and maximums of 30 mm are estimated in this period.

In the Pacific regions, there will be rainfall of variable intensity tonight, but they will be concentrated in the southern Nicoya Peninsula and mountains of the South Pacific, with estimated amounts between 25-40mm and maximums of up to 70mm tonight; in the Central Pacific between 20-40mm in the same period.

For hours in the morning, downpours are expected along the Pacific coast that extend into the early hours of Saturday morning; amounts between 15-30 mm and maximums of 50 mm are estimated in this period near the coast.

For its part, tropical wave # 2 will continue to advance westward and will reach the country during the early hours of Saturday, increasing the possibility of rainfall of variable intensity in the North Caribbean and the North Zone during the morning as it passes. The influence of the tropical wave will continue only on Saturday.
