Hurricane Iota

8:00 a.m.

Diagnosis: Hurricane Iota (category 1) is located 615 km east-southeast of Cabo Gracias a Dios between Honduras and Nicaragua, its travel speed decreased this morning to 9 km / h, now it registers sustained winds of 140 km / h. Upon reaching its hurricane category, it tends to remain more compact, however, it maintains its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The precipitation amounts for the last 12 hours are specified in the following table:

 

Forecast: Iota will continue to increase its intensity in the coming hours. It will be moving into the Caribbean Sea, expected to reach the Nicaraguan coast on Monday night. The main effect that it will have on our country this Sunday will be the modulation of the ITCZ, so it is expected that:

During this Sunday morning, the country remains stable, with little to partial warming and cloudiness, however, variable rains are expected in the south of the country, especially in the Osa and Golfito.

For the afternoon and evening, strong rainy activity will continue on the Pacific slope, particularly in the Central and South Pacific with amounts between 20-90 mm. In the case of the North Zone, the Central Valley, and the Caribbean mountains, strong and isolated showers with an electrical storm are expected, amounts between 20-50 mm.

The indirect influence of Hurricane Iota is expected to continue in the first days of next week.

Warning: Special attention in South Pacific regions due to high levels of saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

    Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation and increased flow in rivers and streams.
    Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
