Unstable conditions persist in the country
September 07, 2019
Diagnosis: The instability generated by the Intertropical Convergence Zone has led to rainy conditions of varying intensity prevailing in the Caribbean and North Zone regions since the early hours of Saturday, with the mountainous part of the latter region having presented the highest accumulated, reaching between 50-100 mm in the last 12 hours, while in the Caribbean the amounts were between 20-40 mm in the same period.
Forecast: During the rest of the morning, there will be showers of variable intensity with isolated thunderstorms in the North Zone, the north of Guanacaste and the province of Limón with amounts between 15-30 mm and maximums of 40 mm in a timely manner. As for the Central Valley, rainfall is estimated in the mountain ranges and its surroundings with amounts between 5-15 mm. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy.
In the afternoon, showers with thunderstorms are expected in the Pacific regions, with amounts between 20-40 mm and localized maximums of up to 70 mm. In the Central Valley the rains will be isolated with possible storm to the west mainly, with amounts between 15-30 mm. On the other hand, in the North Zone and the Caribbean it is estimated isolated showers with scattered storm in the mountainous parts and amounts between 15-30 mm.
During the night, the rains will be scattered and limited to the coast of the Central Pacific and the South Pacific, with amounts between 10-20 mm in a timely manner in this period.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation, increased flow in rivers and streams, and sectors with high propensity for landslides. Caution on the main routes of the country, particularly those that cross mountainous sectors.
- Shelter in a safe place in case of hearing thunderstorms or perceiving strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, as well as precaution for possible fall of tree branches, power lines or hail events, among others.
