Category 5 hurricane Iota now off the east coast of Nicaragua

November 16, 2020
08:00 p.m

Diagnosis: Hurricane Iota remains category 5, with sustained winds of 260 km / h, continuing to move west with a speed of 15 km / h. It is located just 55 km east-southeast Puerto Cabezas Nicaragua.

In the afternoon today and the first hours of the night, there have been localized rains and downpours in the North Pacific with accumulated between 40-80 mm in the surrounding regions of Abangares, Cañas and Monteverde. In addition, in the South Pacific, rainfall is between 30-50 mm, specifically in areas near San Vito and the border region with Panama. In the case of the Central Pacific and Central Valley, the amounts have been below 30 mm so far.

Forecast: Hurricane Iota will make landfall on Monday night and penetrate Nicaraguan territory, maintaining its indirect influence on Costa Rica.

In the night period, scattered rains and downpours of variable intensity are anticipated in all regions of the Pacific, with accumulated in 6 hours between 20-50 mm, with maximum amounts of 90 mm in a localized way. In the Central Valley, light rains and drizzles with accumulated between 10-20 mm are possible, in addition to fog and fog banks. In the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, rains are expected, accumulated between 20-40 mm

Occasional gusts of wind can be experienced in the North Zone and the Guanacaste, Tilarán and Central Valley mountain ranges, maximums are estimated between 40-80 km / h.

Warning: Special attention in South Pacific regions due to high levels of soil saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

· Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation and increased flow in rivers and streams.

· Take refuge in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
