Meteorological warning

Tropical wave # 47 transiting the country this Friday

november 8, 2019.
7:00 am

Diagnosis: An increase in atmospheric pressure on the Caribbean Sea has generated an increase in trade winds over Costa Rica, coupled with this, since this morning the tropical wave # 47 on the country is transiting. Due to these factors, heavy rains with thunderstorms have occurred in the Caribbean and North Zone (mainly in the North Caribbean) during this early morning. In addition, there have been moderate gusts in the Central Valley (34 km / h in San José, 43 km / h in Alajuela, 44 km / h in Pavas, 50 km / h in Cartago), and strong gusts in Guanacaste (73 km / h at La Cruz, 71 km / h the Orosi volcano) and in the mountainous areas (88 km / h Cerro Buenavista, 89 km / h Cerro Chirripó, 54 km / h at Turrialba Volcano).

Forecast: During this morning the rainy conditions in the Caribbean and North Zone will continue, intermittent rains of variable intensity (the strongest during the early hours of the morning) are expected with estimated amounts between 10-50 mm and possible higher amounts in a timely manner . On the other hand, in the Central Valley variable cloudiness between partial and total is anticipated with isolated showers and possible rains of moderate intensity mainly to the east (surroundings of Carthage, Tres Rios, Curridabat) and in mountainous sectors. For the North Pacific, isolated rains and showers are expected in the vicinity of the mountain ranges with amounts estimated between 10-30 mm, while, for coastal areas and plains, as well as for the Central and South Pacific, lower rainfalls are possible intensity with estimated amounts between 1-10 mm.

In the afternoon, in general there will be variable cloudiness between partial and total throughout the country with possible isolated rains in the mountain ranges and its surroundings, as well as in the coastal parts of the Central and South Pacific. Maximum accumulated amounts are estimated between 10-30 mm.

On the other hand, moderate wind conditions are expected throughout the day with occasional gusts for the Guanacaste area, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges. The maximum gusts are estimated in the range of 60-80 km / h for the mountains and between 40-60 km / h for the low areas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  •     Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation, increased flow in rivers and streams, and in areas prone to landslides.
  •     Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  •     Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
